The JVP claims the government has further burdened the public who are already battered by the rise in the cost of living.
Speaking at a media briefing politburo member of the JVP Sunil Handunneththi said the imposition of taxes on ordinary goods cannot be condoned.
He said the era that butter, cheese, chocolates, fruits, and cosmetics were considered luxury items doesn’t exist any longer adding today these are ordinary goods.
Handunneththi said the government through taxation is expecting a large income generation.
He stated the very same taxes that were lifted by the government in 2019 have been re-imposed this week.
The former MP also charged that the government is taxing goods that are considerably in use among the people.
He called for tax concessions to be provided instead of tax hikes owing to the present economic crisis.
Handunneththi charged that the telecommunication tax has also increased to 15%, adding that a majority in the country use mobile phones.
He said the government is planning to systematically generate an income through these taxes.
