The Government Medical Officers’ Association has decided to launch trade union action at state hospitals in five districts, in the upcoming week.
Speaking during a media briefing Secretary of the GMOA Dr. Senal Fernando said the union action is being launch demanding the Ministry of Health to remove Acting Director General of Health Services, Specialist Dr. A Wijesuriya, from his post.
Concerns had arisen pertaining to the deployment of post-internship doctors without the approval of the transfer board.
Dr. Senal Fernando said an indefinite trade union action will be launched in the Mannar, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura districts from Monday, if Acting Director General of Health Services, Dr. A. Wijesuriya, is not removed from his post immediately.
Dr. Fernando said the GMOA is an official member of the transfer board.
He said the GMOA has proved the importance of the post-internship appointment list for appointing doctors for hospitals in rural areas.
He said the Acting Health DG has cut off doctors who were slated to receive appointments to hospitals in rural areas including the Mutur Base Hospital, Mannar District General Hospital, Medirigiriya Base Hospital, National Hospital of Nephrology in Polonnaruwa and the Nuwara Eliya District General Hospital.
