The Government Medical Officers Association has requested the Secretary of the Ministry of Health to declare a health emergency in the country.
In a letter to the Health Secretary, the GMOA said a severe medicine shortage has emerged at present.
The letter states it is crucial to review the availability of medicine and equipment after summoning all relevant parties for a discussion.
The letter adds that it is important to set up a technical committee under the Ministry of Health in order to compile guidelines pertaining to the existing drug management.
The GMOA also proposed to seek the assistance of Sri Lankans living overseas in order to face the drug shortage.
The GMOA letter also notes the importance of formulating a system to ensure the quality of medicines that is obtained through foreign aid.
