President Gotabaya Rajapaksa says the global food system must be transformed more sustainably with all stakeholders working together to achieve this goal.
The President made this statement in a virtual address at the United Nations Food Systems Summit.
The UN Food Systems summit opened in New York yesterday coinciding with the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
President Rajapaksa said the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the weaknesses in global food security adding that the situation will worsen with climate change.
The President added the recent steps taken by the Sri Lankan government to ban chemical fertilisers, pesticides and weedicides is an important milestone in the government’s policy towards sustainable development.
