Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva has requested the protesters and the general public to support the Police and Tri-Forces personnel to maintain peace in the country.
Making a special statement General Shavendra Silva said Police and Tri-Forces personnel have been working within Constitutional provisions.
He said Speaker of House Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena today informed them that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will resign from his post today.
General Shavendra Silva said they also held discussions with the Speaker about the next developments including the appointment of the President.
Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva said they requested the Speaker to hold a party leaders’ meeting to discuss the way forward including matters related to the appointment of a new President.
He said the Police Chief and Tri-Forces Commanders requested the Speaker to convey the decisions taken at the party leaders’ meeting to the public and to them.
