The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says gas companies have taken steps to reduce the components of domestic gas cylinders by 50% without the approval of the Consumer Affairs Authority or the Department of Measurement Units, Standards & Services.
Speaking during a media briefing today, the SJB National Organizer Parliamentarian Tissa Attanayake said the composition was changed by the gas companies in order to make profits.
MP Attanayake said he came across media reports that the Government Analyst had reported the reason behind the recent incidents being gas companies not issuing gas cylinders according to due standards.
The Parliamentarian said according to the Government Analyst a cylinder must contain 80% butane and 20% propane adding however gas companies have reduced the ratios to 50% each. He said explosion is a result of the reaction caused by the new ratio.
He questioned why gas companies resorted to these tactics. Commenting on the recent increase in the prices of bakery products including bread, MP Attanayake said such price hikes indicate that the government is incapable of controlling prices.
He said the All Island Bakery Owners Association reached a decision to increase the price by Rs.10.
The MP said the price of a kilogram of wheat flour increased by Rs.18 adding it was the second time the price increased within a short time span.
MP Attanayake said the Association had stated that the price increase was not definite adding bread is available for Rs.60, Rs.80 or at higher prices.
