Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila has proposed to temporarily suspend the operation of cars and jeeps with engine capacity of over 2,000cc owing to the prevailing fuel crisis.
Speaking to media in Colombo, MP Gammanpila said it is a short-term measure to address the current fuel crisis.
The Parliamentarian noted that even though some may raise concerns saying they are operating their vehicles by spending their own funds to purchase fuel; the government is unable to source dollars to import fuel.
The former Energy Minister also said some luxury cars and jeeps run only four to five kilometres per a litre of fuel.
MP Udaya Gammanpila said however three-wheelers have the ability to run up to 25 to 30 kilometres with one litre of petrol.
MP Gammanpila insisted that it was a short-term measure. He also said although the government has decided to declare Fridays a holiday for non-essential public sector worker, measures must be taken to encourage people to work extra, given the current situation of the country.
MP Udaya Gammanpila proposed that state employees can work in government offices on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays while on Tuesdays and Thursdays they can work from home using the internet and other means.
He said electric signatures, e-documentations and other new technology should be used.
MP Gammanpila also said the general public instead of visiting offices should be encouraged to use whatsapp and email to send in applications other documentations to obtain services from both private and public offices.
