A fundamental rights petition has been filed before the Supreme Court seeking an order to direct the Inspector General of Police and other officials to remove the permanent roadblocks set up in Colombo.
The petition was filed by Shenal Jayasekara, a resident of Gampaha and Hemantha Vithanage, an environmentalist.
The IGP, the Officers in Charge of the Fort and Colpetty Police Stations, the Road Development Authority, the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka and the Attorney General have been cited as respondents in the petition.
The petitioners claim the permanent roadblocks erected by the Police in the vicinity of the Temple Trees and in Fort violate the fundamental rights of citizens to travel freely.
The petition also claims that the public is severely inconvenienced as a result.
The petition cites that such actions are a violation of fundamental human rights guaranteed through the Constitution.
The petition requested the Supreme Court to issue an order that the roadblocks violates the fundamental rights of the people, including the fundamental right to freedom of movement and assembly.
In addition, the petition requests that an order be issued to the IGP and the respondents to immediately remove the permanent roadblocks set up in Colombo.
