Four Sergeants of the Sri Lanka Army and Air Force have been arrested in connection to the death of an inmate who died at the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center last Tuesday night.
Police said the four Officers were employed as counsellors at the rehabilitation center.
The group between the ages of 35 and 39 were arrested after counsellors of the rehabilitation center were called to the Welikanda Police Station to recorded statements.
Based on statements of the suspects, Police found a thick electric wire and 02 bamboo poles allegedly used to assault and murder the inmate.
The dead inmate’s body has been identified by his younger brother and friends while a post-mortem will be conducted today.
The arrested suspects will be produced before the Polonnaruwa Magistrate’s Court today.
Meanwhile, 679 inmates of the rehabilitation center who escaped during the unrest have been remanded once again after police arrested some and others surrendered.
Out of the 998 inmates at the camp, 272 are currently in custody while the Police and the Army are conducting operations to arrest another 44 inmates who escaped.
The Welikanda Police Station OIC informs the public to contact them on 071 859 1235 if they possess information about the escaped inmates.
Furthermore, Rehabilitation Commissioner General Major General Darshana Hettiarachchi says he will receive a full report next Monday, of the investigation into the unrest at the Kandakadu Rehabilitation Center.
He mentioned that four individuals including a senior officer were appointed to conduct the investigation.
A team of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission has visited the center to conduct an investigation.
