Four Police officers who succumbed following the shooting incident at the Thirukkovil Police station on Friday have been promoted, posthumously.
The directive has been issued by the Inspector General of Police and accordingly the four officers will be promoted to their next ranks.
The four officers, a Sergeant, two Constables and a Police Constable driver died in the shooting reported on Friday night.
A Sergeant attached to the Thirukkovil Police Station opened fire using the official firearm of the officer on duty at the main entrance, leaving four officers dead and another four injured.
The Sergeant was arrested after surrendering to the Ethimale Police, with two T-56 firearms and 19 rounds of ammunition.
Yesterday, the Akkaraipattu Magistrate remanded the suspect until the 6th of January.
Meanwhile, a special investigation has also been launched into the incident, based on directives issued by the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police of the Eastern Province.
Police Media Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police Nihal Thalduwa said the investigation will be headed by an Assistant Superintendent of the Police of the Ampara division and the Officer-in-Charge.
