Leader of the United National Party former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today issued a clarification on comments that he as the then-Prime Minister was opposed to the proposal to ban the hijab.
Speaking in Parliament today, Former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the PCoI blamed him for opposing the hijab ban adding the Commission is unaware of the dire consequences of such actions.
The former Premier said no such bans have been imposed in any other countries including the United Kingdom.
Former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said there was no requirement to ban the hijab adding the attacks were not carried out by females.
The former Prime Minister said the AG’s Department must further look into the matter adding it must also be reported to the United Nations Human Rights Council.
Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the Ministry of Public Security was with the party of the Prime Minister which was later taken under the purview of the President through the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.
The former Prime Minister said summoning the Premier before the National Security Council was not a legal matter.
The former Premier said the Parliament Select Committee claimed he was responsible of informing Parliament that he was not summoned before the Council adding that was not the case as Minister’s present at the Council must inform the Premier of proceedings.
Former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said there are instances where the President did not summon the Prime Minister for meetings adding former President Chandrika Kumaratunga did not summon then-Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike either.
The former Premier conveyed his regret over evidence presented before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Easter Sunday attacks.
Former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks would not have occurred if the National Security Council heeded warnings.
The former Prime Minister said the representative of the Attorney Generals Department was more focused on learning specific facts adding however the truth behind the attacks would have been revealed had these individuals executed their duties in a stringent manner.
