The Department of Irrigation warns that there is a risk of minor flooding in low lying areas of the Maha Oya, especially in the low lying areas of the Maradagolla / Naula / Divuladeniya and Welihida Grama Niladhari Divisions of the Giriulla Divisional Secretariat.
In addition, the Department said the Negombo-Kurunegala road near the Giriulla town was at risk of inundation.
The Irrigation Department also announced that there was a risk of minor floods in the low-lying areas of Alawwa / Mirigama / Pannala / Wennappuwa / Negombo / Katana and Dankotuwa.
The Department attributed this to the fact that the water level in the upper reaches of the Maha Oya River has risen significantly due to the rainfall received by the highlands in the Maha Oya basin during the last 24 hours.
Therefore, the Irrigation Department warned the public living in these areas to be vigilant.
Deputy Director of the Disaster Management Center Pradeep Kodippili recalled that a woman passed away after a mound of earth collapsed onto a house in Rambukewala, Kandy.
He stressed that a red notice has been issued to certain areas for landslides.
