The Irrigation Department warns of possible flooding in low-lying areas along the banks of the Kalu, Kelani and Nilwala Rivers due to the inclement weather experienced over the island.
The Department said the water levels of rivers can increase significantly at short notice owing to heavy rains.
Accordingly, residents of low-lying areas in the Pelmadulla, Nivitigala, Ratnapura, Kuruwita, Ayagama and Elapatha Divisional Secretariat areas in the Ratnapura district have been requested to remain vigilant.
The Irrigation Department added that residents of the Pasgoda, Kotapola, Pitabeddara, Akuressa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Thihagoda, Matara, Kamburupitiya, Mulatiyana, and Devinuwara Divisional Secretariat areas could also experience minor flooding and therefore urged area residents to remain vigilant of the rising water levels.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology says the showery and windy conditions are expected to continue in the western and southern sea areas and over the southwest quarter of the island with the strengthening of the Southwest Monsoon.
The Met Department accordingly predicts showers or thundershowers at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Northern and North-Western provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts.
Heavy falls above 100 mm can be expected at some places in these areas.
Meanwhile, the Met Department said strong winds about 50 kmph can also be expected at times along the western slopes of the Central hills and in the North-central, Western, North-western and Southern provinces today.
