The All Island Three Wheeler Owners Association has decided to increase the fare for the first kilometre to Rs.100 with effect from today in line with the fuel price revision.
Chairman Lalith Dharmasekera said Rs.80 will be charged per kilometre from the second kilometre.
He said a price cannot be placed on the time spent in petrol queues, and the difficulties faced in order to obtain fuel.
Dharmasekera added they therefore cannot impose prices on three-wheeler operators who obtain fuel with much difficulty.
However, he said direction has been given in relation to charges.
He noted that in the past three-wheelers operating on meters functioned with the first kilometre at Rs.90 and every other kilometre at Rs.70.
Dharmasekera added certain individuals operating on apps have the first kilometre at Rs.120 and every other kilometre at Rs.100.
He also noted that certain operators without meters charge unreasonable sums of between Rs.250-300 for two kilometres.
He acknowledged that while commuters are affected all parties involved must be taken into consideration including the three-wheeler industry.
