Minister of Finance Ali Sabry has held talks with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Kristalina Georgieva yesterday.
The meeting was held at the IMF headquarters in Washington, DC with the participation of Secretary to the Treasury Mahinda Siriwardana and Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe.
Issuing a statement, the Ministry of Finance said the IMF commended steps already taken by the Finance Minister to mitigate the financial situation in Sri Lanka.
The Finance Ministry said the IMF assured their fullest support to Sri Lanka during the economic crisis.
The IMF Managing Director also responded positively towards expediting the process to strengthen the support extended to Sri Lanka.
The IMF said it will consider a special request by the Finance Minister for a Rapid Financing Instrument with the IMF despite it being outside of standard circumstances.
The Lankan delegation also met with the Finance Minister of India and a top level Indian Economic delegation at the IMF headquarters.
The Ministry said arrangements have been made to hold several rounds of talks today as well.
