The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says according to experts, the fertiliser crisis could lead to a 40 percent shortage of food in the country.
Parliamentarian Mayantha Dissanayake speaking in Parliament during the Committee Stage Debate of the 2022 Budget said the government should increase production capacities of farmers by providing pesticides and weedicides.
He said this could also have an impact on the tea industry.
MP Dissanayake said prior to enforcing decisions by politicians, expert views must be considered adding that politics and related appointments have led to the present situation with the economy in a very critical state.
The MP added Rs.1.8 trillion has been printed in currencies this year alone, terming it as very serious.
Parliamentarian Velu Kumar says the two main issues discussed in the country at present is the shortage of dollars and the explosions of gas cylinders.
Joining the debate yesterday, the MP requested authorities to disclose to the country the quality of the gas composition owing to public fear.
He said incidents were reported from, Polonnaruwa, Nikaweratiya, Pannipitiya and in Sainthamaruthu.
MP Kumar said a former Director of the Consumer Affairs Authority revealed that gas cylinders are not up to the required SLS standards.
