Trade unions representing the Federation of Health Professionals have decided to launch indefinite union action from today.
The Federation said the strike will be centred around provincial hospitals while as a first step a 24-hour strike will be held at hospitals in the North-Western Province today.
A 24-hour strike has been planned at hospitals in the Central Province tomorrow.
President of the Federation Ravi Kumudesh said health workers joined the strike over seven demands that are yet to be resolved by the government.
Kumudesh said they submitted seven demands to the attention of the Ministry of Health, Minister of Finance, and the government.
He said the Federation is launching the second phase of trade union action as the government failed to intervene and provide an acceptable solution.
The President of the Federation expressed their regret over the inconvenience caused to the public and urged relevant officials to commence negotiations.
