A suspect has been arrested in connection with the death of the 9-year-old girl in Atulugama, Bandaragama.
Police said the 29-year-old suspect is a father of three.
He was arrested by the Kalutara Crimes Division.
Meanwhile, the post-mortem examination of the 9-year-old was conducted at the Panadura Hospital today.
The post-mortem revealed that the girl did not suffer any sexual abuse.
The body of the 9-year-old girl was discovered in a marshy land adjacent to her residence on Saturday.
The mother of the girl had lodged a missing persons’ complaint with the Bandaragama Police Station after the girl, studying in Grade 4, didn’t return home on Friday (27) after visiting a store 250m away from her residence to purchase groceries.
A CCTV camera had recorded her leaving the store. Investigations into her death have been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department.
Police have recorded statements from 20 individuals thus far.
