Secretary to the Foreign Ministry Admiral Prof. Jayanath Colombage says an external mechanism to solve internal issues of the country is not required.
Admiral Colombage said the UN Human Rights Council has not been mandated to set up such a mechanism.
He said internal issues of the country are solved through the local legal system.
The Foreign Secretary made this statement during a media briefing held at the President’s Media Centre this morning.
It was revealed that Sri Lanka is a peaceful country in comparison to other countries in the region.
Prof. Colombage added Sri Lanka is at the forefront in defeating terrorism, suppressing extremist terror activities and building peace and reconciliation among the country’s people.
Meanwhile Chief Adviser to the President Lalith Weeratunga said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and all Heads of State attending the UN General Assembly this year will focus on overcoming challenges posed by the coronavirus and engaging in an active and forward-looking plan to overcome the pandemic.
Weeratunga expressed hope that the President will use this year’s UN General Assembly to dispel various misconceptions among the international community regarding Sri Lanka.
