Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has written to the Speaker and the Leader of House to facilitate an adjournment debate following President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s address to Parliament under Article 33(A) of the Constitution on the 19th of January.
Former Premier Wickremesinghe in his letter to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana has said the practice has been followed since the 1978 Constitution came into force.
The former Prime Minister said the Parliamentary Business Committee stands dissolved subsequent to the prorogation of Parliament and therefore the Speaker should consult Party Leaders and hold the debate.
The Leader of the United National Party has proposed to hold the adjournment debate on the 19th and 20th of January and if necessary on the 21st of January as well.
Parliament will reconvene on the 18th of January after the President issued a proclamation to prorogue Parliament last month.
The President will deliver the throne speech when Parliament holds its session on the 18th of January.
