Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says Sri Lanka’s financial crisis has now become a political crisis.
Speaking to an Indian media outlet regarding the current situation in the country, former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe stressed that the government’s decision to impose a State of Emergency is completely unnecessary.
The former Prime Minister has also noted that more protests will be held after the on-going curfew is lifted.
Former Premier Wickremesinghe noted that the people have been pushed to the brink by the government which has resulted in several protests across the country during the past few weeks.
Leader of the United National Party Wickremesinghe noted that the mishandling of the economy has led to the current financial crisis in the country.
He said the breakdown of the economy commenced two years ago.
The former PM noted the present government’s decision to slash taxes to the wealthy, the COVID-19 pandemic and the balance of payment issues, all have contributed to the present financial crisis.
Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe noted that the government should go to the International Monetary Fund with a plan and should be prepared to implement the recommendations.
Former Premier Wickremesinghe noted that the government has not been able to increase its revenue through a home-grown solution and therefore it must listen to the experts.
Former Premier Wickremesinghe said India has been extending support to Sri Lanka in several ways including the Line of Credit.
The UNP Leader noted that however the support received through the Credit Line will be sufficient only for five to six weeks.
Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said the country needs long-term policies to overcome the financial crisis.
