Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has reiterated the importance of using Sri Lanka’s strategic location to become the hub of the Indian Ocean.
Former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe noted that Sri Lanka should aim to become the gateway to India and the Bay of Bengal.
Speaking to an Indian media outlet, the former Premier noted that Sri Lanka can reap financial rewards by working with regional partners especially India.
Former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the Bay of Bengal region is also advancing economically and Sri Lanka should re-strategize based on the demand.
The former Premier added that the country has always been the travel hub connecting the East and the West.
Former Premier Wickremesinghe stressed that India and Sri Lanka can work together in all spheres as long as both countries agree not to be a threat to one another.
Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also emphasised the importance of taking forward the SAARC organisation.
The former Premier said it is not advisable to create a vacuum in the region which will allow outside powers to infiltrate and create issues.
Former Prime Minister Wickremesinghe noted that Sri Lanka’s relations with China run back years and it should not impact the ties with India.
The former Prime Minister said as long as the roles are defined, Sri Lanka and India can work with all international powers which will benefit both nations.
