The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says a visiting delegation of the European Union has stated that certain milestones and achievements reached during the tenure of the previous government, have been lost due to decisions taken by the present administration.
Speaking at a media breifing Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella said such matters were discussed during a meeting between the EU delegation and Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa.
However, MP Kiriella said the Opposition Leader requested EU officials to consider the livelihoods of citizens and continue to grant the GSP+ concession.
The Parliamentarian said Opposition Leader Premadasa also discussed human rights abuses and efforts by the government to influence the independence of the judiciary.
MP Kiriella revealed that they requested the EU to influence the government in ensuring fundamental rights and freedoms.
MP Kiriella revealed how the Samagi Jana Balawegaya explained the freedoms ensured to independent entities by the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, adding that the 20th Amendment influenced these freedoms negatively.
The MP said he presented facts to the EU delegation on how the 19th Amendment ensured that the Police, Attorney General’s Department, State Sector employees, Auditor General’s Department and the judiciary ensured independence during their duties.
He also said they also presented facts over the manner in which the government handled the teacher principal strike and ignored their demands.
