The Ethara Api Organization has expressed disappointment over the government’s decision to close several Sri Lankan consulates and embassies in three countries.
Speaking to the media in Colombo, Secretary of the Organization former Parliamentarian Lakshman Nipunarachchi said it is regrettable that statements are being made that the relevant offices were being closed down to reduce costs.
He said the government can reduce costs in several other ways.
The former MP said the government can reduce costs by slashing the allowances and other facilities provided to Ministers and Members of Parliament.
He also noted a large number of Ministers and MPs are overseas at the present, adding that such individuals are spending the limited dollar reserves of the country.
Lakshman Nipunarachchi said instead of targeting such activities, the government is expecting the general public to make sacrifices and in this case expecting Sri Lankan expatriate workers who send valuable foreign currency to the country to forgo their rights.
