The opposition says if the government fails to honour its debt commitments, the country will face difficulties importing a majority of products.
Speaking during the Committee State Debate, Parliamentarian Harsha de Silva claimed the entire system will shut down if the country is unable to repay its debt, adding imports will come to a halt as well.
He added Google Maps will also shut down, as the government will be unable to pay for the service.
MP de Silva said if dollars are being saved to pay those who purchased international sovereign bonds, the government should reveal who had in fact bought those ISBs.
He said since any individual can purchase such bonds in the secondary market, the MP questioned why the government is holding funds to pay them while restricting imports.
MP de Silva said they have a reasonable doubt pertaining to bond transactions and questioned if dollars are being saved while the people don’t have food to eat, to pay an interest of 107.34% to an individual and 79% interest in July.
