Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa has requested the government to take necessary action to ensure the continuation of livelihoods of citizens, prior to repaying foreign loans.
Speaking during an event in Valvettithurai, MP Premadasa said the government has not prepared any programme to help the public survive.
The Parliamentarian said financial mismanagement by the present administration has caused a serious shortage of dollars adding USD 500 million worth of interest payments are to be made by the 18th of January.
He said the country is also facing challenges in importing essential items including medicines, hospital equipment, food, and crude oil.
MP Premadasa said the public lives will be at risk if the country is unable to source essential medicines and lifesaving equipment
