The Lawyers for Democracy claims the public’s right to life will be violated if the government resorts to increasing electricity and water tariffs while the public face a dire situation due to the increase in prices of essential items.
Speaking to media, representative of the Lawyers for Democracy organisation Attorney Lal Wijenayake said they are looking into the possibility of taking legal action against such a move.
Wijenayake conveyed the organisation’s regret towards the difficulties of the public.
He said bread, sugar, and dhal prices are increasing daily by threefold while a plain tea is also unaffordable.
He said fuel prices were increased by almost 50-60 percent.
Wijenayake said the right to life is the first right guaranteed by the Constitution adding it is the most essential right of the public.
He said failing to secure the right to life violates all other rights by default.
