The National Movement for Consumer Rights Protection says efforts are underway to increase diesel and petrol prices, and electricity tariffs, instead of investigating corruption at state institutions.
President Ranjith Vithanage expressed his views in relation to the statement by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to the nation yesterday where he cited the losses incurred by the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.
Vithanage said consumers are not responsible for the losses incurred by state institutions owing to incidents of corruption.
Ranjith Vithanage added the Movement is prepared to expose incidents of corruption that has been reported at state institutions.
The Chairman said Premier Wickremesinghe yesterday stated that the CPC incurs losses per litre of petrol, diesel, and kerosene, while the Ceylon Electricity Board incurs a loss of Rs.30 per unit of electricity.
He added there is an excess of employees at the CPC and CEB while poor decision making has contributed to the losses, adding that therefore it is unjust to increase prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene and electricity tariffs.
The Chairman requested the Prime Minister to investigate corruption at the CPC and CEB prior to increasing prices.
He stated based on such investigations, they are prepared to accept price increases.
