All government schools in the Colombo Zone and suburbs, and all cities across the island will be closed next week, from Monday the 20th of June.
The Ministry of Education said the decision was reached considering the fuel crisis in the country.
A round of talks were held this morning under the patronage of the Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha to reach a final decision.
Meanwhile the Ministry said Provincial Education Directors are allowed to reach decisions pertaining to schools that not within cities.
Furthermore, schools with a smaller number of students can function if students, and teachers are able to attend without having to face any transport difficulties.
The Ministry said considering the number of students and teachers in schools and the ability to conduct classes with a significant number in attendance, discussions should be held with the Zonal Education Director to continue class functions.
Meanwhile, the Ministry said schools can continue to function through online systems.
The Education Ministry said officials attached to the education sector will convene next Saturday, the 25th of June, to assess the situation and announce a verdict on school functions for the following week.
Meanwhile, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka assured that power disruptions will not take place next week between 8am and 1pm from the 20th to the 24th of June to facilitate the conduct of online learning.
