Police fired tear gas at a group of students of the Inter University Students Federation engaged in a protest opposite the Ministry of Education in Battaramulla earlier today.
Students of the Ruhuna and Kelaniya Universities organised a protest against the suppression within universities and calling for the cancellation of scholarships that they claim were awarded in an unjust manner.
Issuing a statement over the protest held today, the Ministry of Education said the protesters did not inform the Ministry of their concerns in writing or verbally.
The Ministry said officials of the Ministry of Higher Education and the Vice President of the University Grants Commission were also summoned to Isurupaya, yet there was no opportunity for a discussion with the students.
However, a discussion was subsequently held between the Minister of Education, the Convener of the Inter University Student Federation, and student representatives at the Ministry premises.
Accordingly, a decision was reached to hold a discuss next week on students concerns at the Kelaniya and Ruhuna universities with the Ministry of Higher Education and the University Grants Commission and relevant university authorities.
