Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa charges that violence was created in the country by turning an economic disaster into a human disaster.
Speaking in Parliament today, the MP said this was confirmed by the statement made by Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon before the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka.
MP Weerawansa said when the notion that the Police and the Army cannot carry out their duties is circulated; this paves the way for foreign and external influence to be exerted on the country.
The MP added according to information he received through the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka Senior DIG Tennakoon testified that he was informed by the President to prevent the group from Temple Trees reaching Galle Face and accordingly prepared water cannons and tear gas.
MP Weerawansa claimed he then received a call from the Inspector General of Police who informed him to contact a Ministry Secretary who informed Senior DIG Tennakoon that the matter is an issue between two brothers.
MP Weerawansa said the Secretary claimed that the group was former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s supporters and that the Senior DIG would be in trouble if the group is assaulted.
Accordingly, the Parliamentarian said all Police stations were informed to ‘shape’ it up.
