The Election Commission says it needs the powers of an Election Tribunal to investigate complaints regarding illegal election expenses and campaigning.
The matter was raised by representatives of the Commission, during a meeting of the Parliamentary Select Committee to identify reforms to the Electoral Structure and rules and regulations, and to present the necessary amendments in this regard.
The Select Committee, chaired by Leader of the House Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, convened at the Parliament Complex yesterday.
Chairman of the Election Commission Nimal Punchihewa said if the Commission has the authority to investigate complaints regarding election misconduct and unlimited election expenses, it will take less time to reach decisions in this regard.
It was stated that the necessary powers should be provided to regulate election campaigns, as laws are violated through various modern methods.
The committee is scheduled to convene again on the 20th of December.
