The Secretary-General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake has informed the Chairman of the National Election Commission in writing that Mahinda Samarasinghe has resigned from his post as a Member of Parliament.
The letter states that the resignation will take effect from today.
The notice was given by the Secretary-General of Parliament to the Chairman of the Election Commission in terms of Section 64(1) of the Parliamentary Elections Act No.1 of 1981.
Mahinda Samarasinghe handed over his letter of resignation as is due to assume duties as the Sri Lanka Ambassador to the United States.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Samarasinghe said he accepted a request made by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and is, therefore, due to leave for the United States on the 29th of November.
