Minister of Ports Rohitha Abeygunawardena says the project to develop the East Container Terminal of the Colombo Port will commence tomorrow.
Speaking during a media briefing at the Department of Government Information today, Minister Abeygunawardena said the event will be held with the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the participation of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa.
The Minister said the Terminal will be extended to 1,320m in length while the entire Terminal will take up 75 hectares.
He claimed the project will be completed by the 4th of July 2024 adding the entire project will be carried out based on a timetable.
Minister Abeygunawardena said they hope to complete the first 600m of the Terminal by the 4th of July 2023 with six ship to shore container cranes (STS).
He said the second phase will be completed by the 4th of January 2024 with three more STS cranes and 20 rail mounted gantry cranes (RMGs).
The Minister claimed the entire project will be completed by 4th of July 2024, fully equipped with a total of 12 STS cranes and 40 RMG cranes.
He said the East Container Terminal will strengthen the country’s economy.
