The development of the East Container Terminal of the Colombo Port will commence on the 3rd of January.
Speaking to NewsRadio, General Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Progressive Employees’ Union Shyamal Sumanaratne said the terminal will be a huge asset to the country’s economy.
He said all preparations have been made to commence the project in January.
Shyamal Sumanaratne said the East Container Terminal had been a controversial issue and the present administration headed by the President managed to reverse the decision taken by the previous good governance government to develop it.
He claimed trade unions affiliated to the Ports Authority had worked tirelessly to initiate the programme and safeguard the terminal.
Shyamal Sumanaratne added that through the terminal, the Ports Authority will be able to play a major role in strengthening the country’s economy.
