Construction work of the East Container Terminal of the Colombo Port got underway under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa a short while ago.
The commemorative plaque was unveiled at the auspicious time of 10:30am with construction commencing.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, subject Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena and other dignitaries were present at the occasion.
The construction of the first phase of the 75-hectare East Container Terminal, will be constructed at a cost of USD 900 million and will cover an area of 1,320 meters, and is expected to be completed by the 4th of July 2024.
The annual container capacity of the Colombo Port is expected to be increased to 3.5 million by 2035.
