Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma says he will contest to become the next President when nominations are called in Parliament next week.
Issuing a statement, MP Alahapperuma confirmed the development.
MP Alahapperuma said the election which will be held in accordance with the Constitution and Parliamentary tradition will see the appointment of a President to complete the term of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
MP Dullas Alahapperuma said he has been in politics for three decades and always stood for the best interest of the people.
He said in order to resolve the current economic crisis; an collective agreement must be reached after appointing a new administration.
According to reports, several independent SLPP MPs are backing MP Dullas Alahapperuma to become the next President.
Meanwhile, nominations will be accepted for the appointment of a new President on Tuesday (19).
When inquired by NewsRadio, Serjeant-at-Arms Narendra Fernando said the decision was taken at the party leaders’ meeting held this morning.
Meanwhile, if more than one MP is nominated for the post of President then a vote will be taken in Parliament on Wednesday.
Earlier today, Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe took oaths before Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.
