The Ceylon Teachers’ Union claims the attendance in schools has seen a drastic drop today, due to the steps taken by the Ministry of Education to recall students in batches.
Speaking to NewsRadio, the Chief Secretary of the Union Joseph Stalin said it is not practical to prepare students for the third term if classes are conducted on a staggered basis.
Stalin said the entire school system is facing complications due to the circular issued by the Secretary to the Ministry of Education, recently.
He said the circular was issued without a thorough study.
The Chief Secretary of the Union said the fuel shortage and the power crisis have severely affected the education sector, in addition to the school transport services facing difficulties in obtaining fuel.
Stalin urged the government to direct special attention towards transport services.
He said academic activities will only last for a period of one month before the term ends, and questioned how officials plan on carrying out examinations in a timely manner.
Stalin therefore requested the relevant authorities to take necessary steps and restore the education system.
