The Kandy District Inter-Religious Committee says certain groups are attempting to destroy unity among communities by creating racist sentiments based on the murder of Priyantha Kumara.
Speaking during a media briefing in Kandy yesterday, they urged the public to view the killing as an act of extremism and not a racial act.
Convener of the Kandy District Inter-Religious Committee Gamini Jayaweera requested the public not to allow such incidents to destroy unity among communities.
Jayaweera said the country must not resort to extremist reactions adding it is evident that certain groups are attempting to incite racism and disrupt racial harmony based on this incident.
He said everyone must send a message to society that extremism must be defeated across the world.
Jayaweera said any type of extremism is unfavourable adding extremism should not be practiced as a response to such situations.
