Businessman Dhammika Perera took oaths as a Member of Parliament from the National List of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, before the Speaker today.
Perera’s name was handed over to the National Election Commission as a replacement following the seat left vacant with the resignation of Basil Rajapaksa earlier this month.
Perera’s name was gazetted as a MP on the 10th of June by the Election Commission.
However, five Fundamental Rights petitions were filed against the appointment of Dhammika Perera as a MP, that questioned the constitutionality of him accepting a post in Parliament.
When the petitions were being considered before the Supreme Court, Perera informed Court that he does not intend on taking oath as a MP until Court reaches a verdict over the petitions.
The Supreme Court yesterday dismissed the five fundamental rights petitions without taking them up for consideration.
Accordingly, Dhammika Perera is expected to be sworn in as the Minister of Technology and Investment Promotion, and will likely assume duties today.
