Leader of the National People’s Power Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake says the government’s decision to switch to organic fertiliser was not based on scientific findings.
Speaking in Parliament today, the MP said farmers remain uncertain over their fields and the future of their trade and have even pawned their belongings and possessions to make ends meet.
He added Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage will not be affected by the shortage of fertiliser as he draws a salary, is provided a house and drivers owing to his Ministerial portfolio, adding that he is likely growing vegetables as a hobby.
MP Dissanayake said farmers on the other hand must survive through earnings made through farming.
The MP charged that the government resorted to the decision to switch from chemical to organic fertiliser without any thought.
