The decision by the Ministry of Education to extend the duration of school hours by one-hour from the beginning of the new school term tomorrow, has been temporarily suspended.
A proposal was tabled by the Ministry to extend school hours in order to complete this year’s curriculum, to make up for lost time during the closure of schools due to the coronavirus pandemic.
However, the Ministry today announced the suspension of the programme until further notice.
The first term for Sinhala and Tamil medium schools for the year 2022 will commence tomorrow.
The Ministry of Education said school reopenings will be worked off under two phases.
The Ministry attributed the phased reopening owing to the conduct of the GCE Ordinary Level Examination scheduled to be held from the 21st of May to the 5th of July.
Accordingly, the first phase will be held from tomorrow till the 20th of May and the second phase from the 6th of June to the 30th of July.
