The Samagi Jana Balawegaya says 3,000 lives could have been saved from the coronavirus if the imposition of a lockdown had not been delayed.
Speaking during a media briefing this morning Parliamentarian SM Marikkar said the current quarantine curfew cannot be considered a lockdown.
MP Marikkar said the government arrogantly disregarded all requests of the opposition, health experts and other relevant authorities to enforce a lockdown to mitigate the third wave until Chief Prelates made a plea for a lockdown.
He added the death toll was restricted to 12,000 as the government had to heed the requests of the Chief Prelates adding if the request was not made the death toll could have risen to 15,000.
MP Marikkar charged the government of delaying the vaccination programme and also failing to prioritise the vaccinations of individuals above the age of 60.
