The Ceylon Teachers’ Services Union says it vehemently opposes the move to appoint new principals by violating the Constitution and the Establishments Code.
General Secretary of the Union Mahinda Jayasinghe said they will not allow any new appointments to be made in violation of either the principal or teacher services codes. He said attempts are underway to appoint 4,718 principals without any competitive exams and only through an interview process. Mahinda Jayasinghe noted that on the 29th of December, a gazette notification had been issued by the Secretary to the Ministry. He said they have held discussions with a number of parties pertaining to the matter. The CTSU General Secretary noted appointments of principals, teachers and administrative staff must be in line with existing regulations and the Establishments Code.
On a separate note, Mahinda Jayasinghe reiterated that teachers and principals will continue to boycott all events that are attended by politicians affiliated to the government. He said those who are part of the government heavily criticised them when they were merely protesting to win their rights. Jayasinghe said there are no changes to the decision taken by Teachers-Principals Trade Union Alliance that members will not participate in events attended by government members.
