A writ petition has been filed before the Court of Appeal calling for a criminal investigation to be conducted over the distribution of substandard LP gas cylinders.
The petition filed by Civil Activist Attorney Nagananda Kodituwakku has named 10 parties including the Attorney General, Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardana, State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna, the two gas companies, Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority and Sri Lanka Standards Institution as respondents.
The petition called for an order to be issued to the Inspector General of Police to conduct the relevant criminal investigation.
Another request is to direct the respondent gas companies to pay compensation to the owners of residences that were damaged in gas related accidents.
Attorney Nagananda Kodituwakku also requested the cylinders containing the controversial gas stocks be removed from the market. The petition is due to be considered tomorrow.
