Court has rejected a request made by Police to issue an injunction order and prevent members of the Inter University Students’ Federation from entering a number of roads in Colombo during today’s planned protest march from the Nelum Pokuna Theatre to the University Grants Commission.
The request made by the Cinnamon Gardens Police was rejected by Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe.
NewsRadio court correspondent said Police was seeking the order since the protest march will inconvenience the general public.
Further an order was sought to prevent IUSF members from behaving violently and from obstructing the duties of Police officers.
However, Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe had refused to issue the order and instructed Police to take action under provisions of the Police Ordinance, if protesters behaved in a violent manner.
Our correspondent said Police was seeking to prevent protesters from entering the CWW Kannangara Mawatha, Albert Crescent, Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Sir Ernest de Silva Mawatha, Queen’s Road, 5th Lane, Flower Road and the Bauddhaloka Mawatha.
