Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the country is not in a position to conduct elections.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with NDTV, Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said the 21st Amendment to the Constitution will be passed by the Parliament but it will not call for any elections.

The Prime Minister said abolishing the Executive Presidency will also call for a public referendum adding however it is not viable at present.

Premier Wickremesinghe said prevailing issues must be addressed prior to holding elections as it is the responsibility of the government.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said loans obtained from friendly nations had a gestation period adding however the government’s decision to invest in international sovereign bonds brought the economy down.

The Premier added taking on unnecessary development projects also had a negative impact.

Premier Wickremesinghe said funds should have instead been utilised to develop various sectors of the economy.
