Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella requests the government to convene Parliament immediately.
Speaking during a media briefing today, MP Kiriella said in the face of the current economic crisis the number of Parliamentary sessions must be increased instead of shutting the Parliament down.
The Parliamentarian said the country is facing a major economic crisis due to many issues including the dollar crisis, shortage of gas, fertilisers and fuel and the increasing prices of essential commodities.
He charged the government of proroguing Parliament due to its inability to provide answers to questions raised by the opposition had the Parliament been in session.
MP Kiriella said the government claims to require the opposition’s assistance adding however the opposition is unable to provide assistance outside of Parliament.
He said the government does not call for assistance on any matters.
On a separate note, MP Kiriella claimed that they were unaware of the contents of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution until it was tabled in Parliament.
