The United National Party has called for an independent inquiry over the incident reported at the Anuradhapura Prison involving the State Minister of Prison Management and Prisoners Rehabilitation.
Issuing a statement, General Secretary of the UNP Palitha Range Bandara said holding a prisoner at gunpoint and threatening him is a criminal offence and therefore an investigation must be conducted against State Minister Lohan Ratwatte.
Former Parliamentarian Palitha Range Bandara said State Minister Lohan Ratwatte should not escape punishment merely due to resigning from his portfolio.
He said holding any individual at gunpoint and intimidating is a criminal offence under the Penal Code and therefore an independent inquiry is required over the incident.
The UNP General Secretary noted that the country will also face international condemnation over such incidents.
He said when the country is facing human rights violation charges, a government Minister has used his powers arbitrarily and intimidated prisoners who are being held for a lengthy period.
UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said the people and the country should not suffer due to irresponsible actions of government ministers.
