The Samagi Jana Balawegaya has urged the government to compensate farmers whose crops were damaged due to the fertiliser crisis.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo this morning, Parliamentarian Kavinda Jayawardena said the fertiliser crisis was created due to the reckless actions of the government.
MP Jayawardena attributed the increase in the price of vegetables and rice to such reckless actions.
He said the farming community requested relevant fertiliser to be provided in a timely manner to engage in their activities adding however the government failed to do so leading to the farming community losing livelihoods.
The Parliamentarian said the Minister of Agriculture claimed to provide organic fertiliser and compensation in the event farmers faced losses.
He questioned how members of the government are engaging in foreign tours during such a crisis and questioned why the present administration is unable to comprehend the current situation.
On a separate note, MP Jayawardena requested the government to take necessary steps to compensate homes that were damaged due to gas explosions.
He questioned why the government is not intervening in order to recall gas cylinders, reimburse the public and provide new cylinders.
The MP said the present administration must ensure the safety of citizens over appointing committees.
He said the government appointed committees over the Easter Sunday attacks, the controversial bond transaction, the sugar scam, and the garlic scam but to no avail.
